Joyce Carlin

Still here...

Joyce CarlinAfter graduating from MLHS I graduated from Glassboro State College (now Rowan University) with a BA in Secondary School English Teaching and a minor in Speech and Drama. Then, at the end of 1969, exactly a week after my 22nd birthday, I married Raymond Klemenz, a large group insurance sales executive with Equitable. We were married for almost 17 years and lived a comfortable life in Washington Twp., with a nice big custom house, pool, travel, nice clothes, etc., which I later learned was because we had no children. We divorced (though remained friends) in 1986, after which I married my current husband Chris Kloss, a computer software designer, moved to Mullica Hill, and had our daughter Jessica, born on her half sister's 20th birthday. She attended Friends School; we became Quakers, and Jess is now a senior in Moorestown HS, about to enter Princeton University majoring in physics with a concentration in creative writing and an interest in psychology and languages. I found out why I'd had extra money when I didn't have her, because children are certainly very expensive! Jess was involved in many activities, including competitive ice skating (3 years at a dollar a minute, not counting costumes and skates), swimming, dance, soccer, tennis, piano 3rd grade to the present, gymnastics age 3-15 (when she was almost 6' tall), and then varsity track and field, and volleyball. She is 1st in the state in pole vault, 3rd in triple jump, and 3rd in long jump, and 8th nationally in pole vault in the Adidas Outdoor Nationals in 2004 in NC. She's kept us very happy, proud, and busy!

I got a job in Glassboro without even applying while I was subbing my senior year, started teaching junior high speech and drama, and am still teaching in Glassboro, moving back and forth from there to HS, for a total of 36 years, 14 in junior high and the rest in HS, mostly teaching English, and for the last 9 years teaching in-school suspension. I'm anticipating retiring at the end of December '05. I got my MA from Glassboro in 5/77, and have accrued 30 credits beyond that, mostly in English literature. The time has really flown! I enjoy reading about MLHS as the #1 public HS in NJ, and tell my students stories of the old days, which are very old to them! Moorestown HS was #1 in South Jersey and #3 in the entire state when we moved there for Jess to attend HS.

My favorite thing to do is travel - mainly to Europe, but will expand that much further in retirement. I'm getting into bike and barge trips now. I love to shop, particularly in foreign places, and find bargains anywhere I can, particularly enjoying shopping for Jessica. I'm an avid skier and have skied extensively in the US, Canada, and Europe. I can't wait to be free to go when it isn't a school holiday and is thus less crowded and more reasonable. I'm also still an avid reader, mostly fiction, but all types of fiction. I enjoy decorating and handwork and some crafts. Besides biking and skiing I work out 4-5 times a week, garden, etc. In Moorestown, I'm a HS Council member, layout editor of the HS newsletter, and chair of the graduation committee.

In my teaching job I've headed the yearbook, directed plays, run the annual school ski trip to VT, led student European trips, been chosen for Who's Who Among America's Teachers, represented my building for our teaching association, chaired the cheer committee, been a member of the climate committee, been in charge of Renaissance statistics, graded all the SRA process essays, and attended many Friday afternoon "attitude adjustment" sessions. I also tutor homebound students for Cherry Hill and do Praxis exam scoring for ETS. I think that about encapsulates the last 40 years.
