Dana Ely

Hey, here’s my pic taken last summer on a family trip to Idaho.

I think I look pretty cool considering the fact I spend most of my time dorked out behind a computer terminal. I have worked at the Library of Congress for over thirty years, slowly reading myself to death. But that’s OK, check out the Virginia Woolf quote on reading, St. Peter and the Day of Judgement. Not that I am a Virginia Woolf fan but I like the quote a lot.

I lived in DC for over twenty years, first as a wild and crazy guy( see the shirt) a la Steve Martin, and then after three presidential inaugurations I got married to a woman who went to Morris Hills High School. I learned to obey her. She birthed. I became a dutiful Dad walking in the park with one kid on my back the other in the baby carriage and my two dogs sniffing the bushes looking for old chicken bones. All was good, we’d walk up Fifth St. N.E. everyday to Stanton Park.

My oldest daughter liked the playground, my youngest had a fascination with used cigarette butts. Then the crack wars hit, people were gettin’ blown away for making eye contact. We fled to How-weird County in Md. where everyone is perfect(ask them), but most importantly, nobody’s brains are on the street. My two dogs died, my two daughters grew up, one goes to UVa and the other plays the flute and skates. I got a new dog and she understands every word I say. I talk to her a lot because no one else will listen to me.

However sometimes I throttle down to stealth mode(no talk) when we are fly-fishing and we are sneaking up on that big rainbow. For the last few years Paul McCann has stopped by on his way to the Dominican Republic and we get drunk(it only takes three beers)(between us) and we sing the alma mater.

If I live long enough to retire I would like to save the world however I am old enough to actually wonder if the world really wants to be saved. As an alternate choice I might just take a job as the fish taco guy at the Mexican restaurant inA downtown Boise.

A dios.
