The Memorial Service for Bill Kogen will be held at the Community Church in Mountain Lakes, New Jersey on Saturday, March 19, 2005 at 4:00 PM. Those who wish to remember him by making possible something that he cared about very much are asked by his family to make a gift to the Lakeland Hills YMCA O'Neill "No Excuses" Competitive Swimming Endowment.

Competitive swimming was important to Bill throughout his life, wherever he was -- Flatbush Boys' Club, U.S. Navy, University of Michigan, Fayson Lakes Beaches or Mountain Lakes Beaches, Oak Park High School, Mountain Lakes High School, Morristown High School and the Summit and Lakeland Hills YMCAs. Being part of a team meant everything to Bill. The excellence he pursued tirelessly in his own life meant so much more because it contributed to the good of the whole team. His lifelong friends are his teammates, his fellow teachers and coaches, his business associates, his students, and members of the Football, Cross Country, Track and Swimming teams that he coached. The teamwork ideal that he learned and practiced in the pool was evident in every aspect of his life away from the pool -- in the classroom, in the office and with his family.

The O'Neill Competitive Swimming endowment provides scholarships to members of the Lakeland Hills Y Swim team to allow all qualified swimmers to participate fully in the team. The scholarships may cover the cost of such things as Y membership for the swimmer, team dues; meet entry fees, training equipment and travel expenses. They are awarded based on financial need, and on dedication, volunteerism and a positive attitude in association with the team.

Helping young swimmers to be part of a team, and to experience the joy of competition, sportsmanship and service to others is a wonderful way to remember Bill, and to give to others what he gave to so many.

Contributions may be made to the Lakeland Hills YMCA O'Neill Swimming Endowment, in memory of William E. Kogen. These donations are tax deductible to the extent permitted by law.
